“It all started within my mother’s quick afternoon hangout session with me, unable to recall every particular detail, however,
I can briefly say it was one sunny bright afternoon during the weekend, where she walked into my room as I held on to my little notepad, mostly used for random writing on occasion to occasion.
She grabbed it from my hand and simply began sketching, so effortlessly like air she ran that pencil on the paper, personally having no clue what she’d draw, I starred, focused deeply towards her expression, she seemed, out of so long in time, to have awakened something inside of her in which she had been keeping hidden, almost abandoned, the look on her face, it lightened up.
The instant my mother turned that notepad around and told me with a smile to look, I was in awe with what I’d seen.
To be in awe isn’t even describing my reaction, it’s more so I’d discover what my purpose in life was that very moment. We connected that afternoon, you know what was on the notepad do you? Sketches of dresses she’d dream of designing, crafting to life. Her mind created a whole collection, an empire of dreams was behind every single design. I felt it, they meant everything to her, it’s as if she’s been waiting to get the opportunity to draw.
I wholeheartedly still hold on to the notepad,
maintaining it in a small box back home within other significant items throughout my life.
This is only the start, my love for fashion, innovation in this world only grew more and more as I became fond, close to it’s importance in my life, not just any fashion, but fashion that’d come from history, from heart, from culture, from life itself, from a hardship process yet managed to become so successful.
The look on my mother’s face is my every motivation, the goal is to bring that spark to every person whom will come across my designs, my clothes, my making. They will see my work and imagine themselves doing the impossible wearing it day to day. Take in account, not just to anyone but to my community of Latinos, my people whom I know feel as if they’re only ever going to wear clothes from high fashion retail, two words are my response.. no.
My people and every single individual who don’t live up on thousands to millions of dollars are also deserving to wear luxury, high quality clothing, they deserve to feel expensive, exclusive. While yes, cautiously being aware, what makes a luxury brand luxury is it being unaccessible to everyone, however, I feel as if this needs to have some sort of drastic transition, one that makes sense but yet does the impact, influences my reason to the world.
